Greg Heiar (pronounced “higher”) was named the new head coach of the NMSU men’s basketball team yesterday. Heiar is the 27th head coach to lead the program. He replaces Chris Jans, who announced last week he was leaving for Mississippi State.
Heiar comes from Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida, where he led the Raiders men’s basketball team to an NJCAA Division I national title earlier this month.
A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Heiar also previously worked as an assistant coach at Wichita State, East Tennessee State and Louisiana State University.
Coach Heiar will be formally introduced at a press conference this afternoon at 4 p.m. on the floor of the Pan American Center. The press conference will be open to the public.
