New Mexico State volleyball wins home opener in straight sets

Coming off a win against I-25 rival UNM in the Lobo Classic this past weekend, The New Mexico State volleyball team continued its dominance on Tueday with a win over Grambling State.

The New Mexico State Aggies shut down the Grambling State Lady Tigers with a 3-0 season home-opening win. Over 1,000 people showed up at the Pan American Center to attend the match.

To begin the first set, the Aggies and Tigers started off point for point, but New Mexico State eventually pulled ahead and won the set 25-15 with the help of 14 kills compared to Grambling State’s six.

The Lady Tigers put up a fight in the second set with 10 kills. However, the Aggies finished out the set with a 25-17 win. In the final battle with the fighting Tigers, the Aggies showed no mercy with a match high 17 kills in the 25-13 win.

Throughout the match, NMSU had 49 kills with 44 assists against GSU’s 19 kills and 19 assists. The Aggies got a lot of assistance from Briana Ainsworth and Natalie Mikels, who combined for a total of 33 assists. Cat Kelly killed it with 13 total kills for the match.

The Aggie volleyball team heads into the New Mexico State Springhill Suites Invitational with a 5-2 record after three consecutive wins. The Aggies open up the tournament against Montana on Friday Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
