Deming Public Schools superintendent Arsenio Romero was named as the newest member of the NMSU Board of Regents Monday. Romero was nominated by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Senators unanimously approved his nomination at the state capitol building yesterday.

Romero previously served on Gov. Lujan Grisham’s agency transition team for the state’s public education department following the governor’s election in 2018. He also served as an assistant superintendent with the Roswell Independent School District and as principal of Jornada Elementary School in Las Cruces.

Romero is replacing Jerean Hutchinson, who resigned from the board in April 2019. Hutchinson’s term as regent was set to expire in December 2020.

Romero’s contract as superintendent with Deming Public Schools will expire June 30, 2022. Romero has also worked as an assistant professor in the NMSU Department of Education for five years, but indicated he will no longer teach on campus while serving as a regent.

Romero grew up in New Mexico and holds a Ph.D. from NMSU.
