Former New Mexico six-term senator Pete V. Domenici died Wednesday at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

Following Domenici’s retirement from the U.S. Senate in 2008, the Pete V. Domenici Institute for Public Policy was established on the main campus of New Mexico State University.

In addition to hosting the annual Domenici Public Policy Conference, NMSU serves as a repository for all of the senator’s papers and archives spanning over 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.
Senator Domenici’s death came on the first day of the 10th annual Domenici Public Policy Conference, which began Wednesday morning at the Las Cruces Convention Center.
