After just one year as the Aggie men’s basketball head coach, Toronto native Paul Weir is leaving NMSU to take over as the new men’s basketball head coach at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The UNM job opened up when former Lobo head coach Craig Neal was fired March 31.
Weir, 37, set a program record by leading the Aggies to 28 wins and an NCAA tournament appearance in his first year as the head coach. He will be the first person to serve as the head coach of both the NMSU and UNM men’s basketball teams. Weir has reportedly been offered a six-year contract.
